Credit: ESL / Stephanie Lindgren OG has won the ESL One Malaysia Dota 2 tournament after beating the Chinese squad, Team Aster, in the grand final. OG took the grand final with a 3-0 scoreline, taking down Team Aster in a convincing fashion.
In game two of the grand final Team Aster’s Du "Monet" Peng managed to get an impressive rampage while defending the base, in what was one of the best plays of the entire event, but it was not enough to stop OG, who would go onto win the game and later the series. Throughout the series, Mars was the hero to watch. OG first picked the offlaner for Ammar "ATF" Al-Assaf in games one and two, and he proved just how good he is on the hero.
In game three, instead of banning the Mars that caused them problems, Team Aster decided to pick it for themselves, but OG were able to counter it, at times using Underlord to simply teleport away when Mars tried to start a fight, proving they were just a step ahead in this game. What makes this win even more impressive is that OG managed to win the event with their coach, Evgenii "Chuvash" Makarov, standing in. Team captain Mikhail "Misha" Agatov was unable to travel to the event due to visa issues, meaning Chu was forced to step in.
However, this clearly wasn’t an issue for OG, with some even saying Chu was the MVP of the tournament. With a large SEA fan base, the OG win was certainly popular with the crowd in the Arena of Stars in the Genting Highlands. This was the first top-level Dota 2 event in the SEA region for over two years, which resulted in an incredible atmosphere from the fans.
Despite easily topping the group, being the only team in group B to win more than one series 2-0, OG was knocked to the lower bracket in the first round of the playoffs by Team Secret. It was a close-fought series, with a couple of long games that could have gone either way, but ultimately the two-time TI champions were knocked to the lower bracket. This then set up the rematch with Team Secret in the lower bracket final, and having learnt from the first meeting, OG impressively took them down 2-0 to secure a spot in the grand final against Team Aster. Team Aster also topped their group, and had a fairly simple run, at least compared to OG, through the upper bracket. After an entertaining match against Fnatic, which they won 2-1, they easily took down Team Secret 2-0 in the upper bracket final.
The win gives OG $175,000, and another trophy to take home after they won the ESL One Stockholm Major earlier this year. Team Aster meanwhile take home $85,000. Both teams will now turn their attention to The International 11, the annual Dota 2 world championship, which is due to take place in Singapore in October.
Both teams have directly qualified for the event through DPC points, accumulated from their performances across the season. Follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn . Check out some of my other work here .
