The presenter was diagnosed in September 2021 and underwent a single mastectomy in October and has been sharing her journey and recovery very openly. Julia, 52, told the Loose Women panel on Monday that she ‘tries to find joy’ in her life every day, as she opened up about her new outlook on life.
‘One of the things that is not spoken about with what happens next after cancer, is stress management and it is so important because it’s a big contributor to people who get cancer,’ she began, revealing that she now practises medication every night. She described her life now as ‘a really difficult balancing act’ between taking care of her health, her personal life, and working, but credits her three children for supporting her. ‘I can’t believe it will be a year ago since I lost my breast and this chapter in my life began.
But also, my children continue to grow and I want to be there so much for them. ’ The presenter was diagnosed with breast cancer one year ago (Picture: Getty) She recalled the ‘difficult decision’ to tell her children about her cancer diagnosis, but knew she needed to as they were going to see her ‘going through significant changes’. ‘Kids are so instinctive, they would’ve picked something up if I tried to hide something as big as that.
Also, I’m on the telly, somebody would’ve mentioned it. They would’ve heard it through another source so it’s much better to do it in our own environment. ’ Julia also tries to be ‘very honest’ with the production teams about her limits when working on TV shows now, telling the crew of her latest project that she needs a ‘slower start in the morning’ and can only work for two days before needing a rest.
She credits her children for helping her through (Picture: Instagram) ‘I’ve set my limits and I think you have to, regardless of your job’. Reflecting on how far she’s come and sharing how she now tries to look after herself, the TV host said not only has she changed her mindset, but also her diet, has cut out alcohol, and does weight training twice a week. Julia is aware that her recurrence rate is ‘slightly higher than the average woman’, but tries to manage this and reduce her risk via lifestyle tweaks.
