Boys soccer playoffs: Oxnard, Agoura and Nordhoff fall in sectional semifinals
The Oxnard High boys soccer team’s drive for the first sectional final berth in its history fell just short on the road Saturday. The Yellowjackets were eliminated 4-2 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 tie with host Orange Lutheran in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 semifinals. “We played our heart out,” Oxnard coach Chris Conte said.
“It was tough. I think were the better team but that’s not how it always works. It’s unlucky on our part.
” After scoring early in three straight playoff games, Oxnard (19-4-8) fell behind for the first time in the postseason when Orange Lutheran put in a rebound through traffic just before halftime. But the deficit only lasted 15 minutes, as senior Miguel Cabrera scored off a free kick to pull the Yellowjackets even with the Mission League opponent in the 65th minute. “We were down and we came back,” Conte said.
“We took it to them the whole second half. We had our chances. ” Oxnard pressed through persistent fouling for a winning goal, but it never came.
“It’s just hard being on the road with different officials,” Conte said. “We went through a lot of adversity. They were behind us and fouling us and they wouldn’t call them.
You can look at the back of my guys’ legs. They’re all beat up. ” To double the disappointment, Oxnard’s season is likely over since only two teams in Division 4 get an automatic CIF-State regional berth.
“ We’re one of the better teams and we should go,” Conte said. San Clemente 4, Agoura 1: The Chargers’ bid for a first sectional final appearance in 36 years dissolved in the face of San Clemente’s bruising pressure. Agoura was overrun in the opening half-hour, conceding in the second minute and three more times in the first 27 minutes.
“They wanted it more in the first half,” Agoura coach Jaime Alvardo said. “Aggressive to everything. Won everything.
We were too timid. ” Agoura forward Evan Sanchez finally turned the tide for Agoura in the 34th minute, when he hustled to a through pass and finished from a tight angle. The Chargers carved out a series of chances early in the second half that would have pulled it back into the game without the heroics of San Clemente goalkeeper Ryan Savoie.
“I’m proud of the way we fought back second half,” Alvarado said. “They just sat back and we couldn’t convert. ” Agoura (12-6-3) awaits its CIF-State regional seeding later this month.
Cypress-Oxford Academy 0, Nordhoff 0 (Oxford Academy advances 4-2 on PKs): The Rangers’ first run to a sectional semifinal since 2014 was stopped in the tiebreaker after a 100-minute stalemate. Nordhoff created plenty of chances but struggled to convert, hitting the post seven times, according to coach Matt Inman. "The CIF run was a great experience that I wouldn't trade," Inman said.
"But our loss was really hard. The guys played with total commitment. " Joe Curley covers soccer for The Star.
