Mahindra has revealed five new electric SUV (e-SUV) concepts as it looks to enter the growing Indian electric vehicle market. The new concepts preview a range of new battery electric SUVs that are set to arrive over the coming years with the company planning to have a 5 e-SUV strong line-up by 2027. Here’s everything you need to know.
Mahindra’s new concepts are based on a new modular INGLO (Indian Global) skateboard architecture. Mahindra says that the platform is adjustable for size and can be used with a variety of top hats and drive configurations. The INGLO platform supports rear- and all-wheel drive platforms with up to 250kW (335 bhp) on tap.
The platform also supports a variety of battery sizes ranging from 60-80 kWh with fast charging capabilities of up to 175kW. The INGLO platform also uses components from VW’s MEB electric vehicle platform. Mahindra’s new range of EVs will fall under two distinct brands.
The first is the XUV brand which will see the debut of two electric SUV by end-2026 with the second being a new BE brand which too will see the launch of two EVs in the same period. The XUV brand will be identified by the company’s Twin Peaks logo finished in Copper. Mahindra has confirmed that four out of the five concepts will make it to production by end-2026.
The first to arrive will be the company’s models under the electric XUV brand. The first will be the XUV. e8 which is due to arrive in December 2024.
Mahindra has confirmed that the XUV. e8 will feature an all-wheel drive set-up. In terms of size the concept measures 4740mm long, 1900mm wide and 1760mm tall making it 55mm shorter in length as compared to the Toyota Fortuner.
The 2762 mm wheelbase meanwhile is 7mm longer than the Toyota. The dimensions also place it marginally above the XUV700. The XUV e.
9 will follow the e8 into production with a tentative launch in April 2025. In terms of size, the e9 concept is 50mm longer than the e8 with the coupe roof-line giving it a shorter height of 1690mm. Wheelbase too is longer than thee8 at 2775mm.
Following the two XUVs will be the first BE model based on the BE. 05 concept. The aggressively styled concept has been billed by Mahindra as a Sports Electric Vehicle which the company says will sit in a segment of its own.
In terms of size at 4370mm long the BE. 05 is similar in size to the MG ZS EV and the current crop of compact SUVs. The concept measured in at 1900mm wide and 1635mm tall with the wheelbase stretching to 2775mm.
Following up the BE. 05 will be the larger BE. 07 which while sitting on the same wheelbase is almost 200mm longer and 25mm taller.
Mahindra describes the BE. 07 as the family SUV with the company claiming first-in-class experiences within the cabin. Mahindra says that it’s new range of electric SUVs will meet the highest standards in safety including achieving a full 5-star global NCAP rating.
Additionally, the company has said that the new INGLO platform will also support autonomous driver assistance systems with as many as 5 radar sensors on board making it futureproofed up to Level 2+ autonomous driving. The new INGLO platform comes bundled with adaptive vehicle dynamics including semi-active suspension for enhanced dynamics along with a brake-by-wire system offering multiple brake modes for pedal feel and recuperation. Additionally, the electric SUVs will come with drive modes that the company says will adjust not just the electric drivetrain responses but also adjust the suspension, brake feel and ESC intervention.
We could expect some of these features to be offered on the sportier models in the range. Mahindra says that the new INGLO platform supports plug-and-play for household appliances allowing users to connect devices to the vehicle not just for charging but to use the in-car displays for matters ranging from work to leisure and gaming. All five SUV concepts came with multiple screens on board including the driver information display and a central touchscreen with certain models getting a third co-driver unit.
