Roy Keane reveals ‘worry’ over Manchester United summer signing Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen is a ‘very good’ player but won’t fix Manchester United ’s problems in midfield, according to former Old Trafford captain Roy Keane. Eriksen made his United debut in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Brighton , having joined the club on a free transfer earlier in the summer . The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford star has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford.
Keane is an admirer of ‘really talented’ Eriksen but insists the Denmark international won’t get United back to challenging for major trophies. Manchester United have gone five successive seasons without a trophy and began the 2022-23 campaign by losing at home to Brighton . Keane was asked about United’s move for Eriksen before their Premier League opener and told Sky Sports: ‘Look, I think he’s a really good player.
‘In the bigger picture, will he get Manchester United back competing for league titles? The answer is no. ‘My biggest worry for players like Eriksen, the big problem for United over the last few years when they’re out of possession, especially against the better teams, they’re not great at getting back. ‘That’s not one of his strengths.
He’s a really talented player, a very good player obviously, but I’m not convinced he’s the answer. ’ Eriksen has been a long-time target for Manchester United, with the Dane revealing he had spoken to three former managers about a move to Old Trafford . ‘When I was at Spurs, I spoke to every manager who’s been here at Man United to see what the situation was,’ Eriksen said last week.
So, it’s been on the books. Well, not on the books, but it’s been spoken about. I was at Spurs for a long time and I wanted to try something abroad, so I went to Inter and ended up having a lovely time. ‘But then obviously something happened in the summer and that changed the career path I had in mind, so I came back to England, to Brentford first of all. ‘To be here [at United] is something I didn’t think could happen a year ago.
I never thought it was going to happen. ’ To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Eriksen briefly played as a false nine during Manchester United’s disappointing defeat to Brighton but moved back into the midfield after Cristiano Ronaldo’s introduction after half-time. Ten Hag said: ‘We didn’t have a typical number nine, I knew he [Eriksen] did it at Ajax, a long time ago, play as a striker.
‘I think Christian Eriksen is the best in the midfield. It was also the idea [against Brighton] that he drops and gets in between the lines. ’ MORE : Graeme Souness slams Manchester United star: 'He’s dodgy like Paul Pogba’ MORE : Why Manchester United decided against poaching Graham Potter from Brighton For more stories like this, check our sport page .
