My luck continues! Today's Wordle is a standard word that should give few people major problems. I was glad to notch another 3/6, as I'm getting closer to making it my most frequent score. As usual, I began with RAISE, my favorite among the best Wordle start words .
Today, it was not lucky, giving me only a yellow 'S' and leaving behind 104 possible solutions. Start words that fared better include TOILS (1), CLONE (2), STALE (13), CLEAT (16), LANCE (21), LEAST (32) and STARE (81). You joined the no luck club if you went with TASER (111), LEARN (141) or TRAIN (439).
Whenever I just get a yellow 'S' off RAISE, I choose from a number of options, all of which contain an 'O' and 'U' and begin with 'S' as it's the most common starting letter. My go-to guesses are SOUTH, SHOUT, SCOUT, SPOUT and SNOUT. Today, I picked that last one.
It confirmed the positions of 'S' and gave me a green 'O,' not too shabby. Plus, I'd eliminated all but 14 possible solutions. Most players in my position chose SHOUT, followed by SOUND and SPOUT.
Even having narrowed down the possibilities, I needed luck on my side to get the right answer. Well, luck and some strategy. As readers of this column know, in the early rounds, I typically try to incorporate the most common consonants.
I'd already used up 'N' and 'T' so this time, I wanted to try 'L' or C. ' Or why not both? I entered SCOLD and was delighted to see it turn all green. Truly, I'd say it was about 90% luck, 10% skill.
Most players in my position also guessed a word with 'L' and 'C' — SCOWL. I might've picked it too, had it crossed my mind first. Did you match or beat me today? Let me know via email (opens in new tab) ! Reading this in a later time zone? The Wordle answer for game #591 was CROSS.
Kelly here, back for the rest of the week's Wordle games and to see out the month of January (wow, time flies!). Yesterday, I got CRAVE in four tries, which annoyed me since I had four green letters by round two. That made me determined to get a lower score today.
As usual, I began with RAISE, my favorite among the best Wordle start words . Today, Wordlebot rates it as a very lucky guess, as it left behind just 15 possible solutions. Other start words didn't fare as well, including STARE (16), LEAST (31), CLEAT (51), TRAIN (69) and SLANT (107).
But you were even luckier if you chose CLOSE (1), CARTS (2), TOILS (5), CREST (5) or TARPS (6). For my second guess, I knew I need to find a vowel. I also wanted to guess a word incorporating the other most common consonants, which are 'T,' 'L,' 'N' and 'C.
' Considering the 'S' was locked into the fourth slot, I decided to go with something ending in 'T. ' I hit upon CRUST. Turns out luck was still on my side, as it confirmed the 'CR' and eliminated all but the the right answer.
More players in my position guessed FROST, followed by CRUST and CRUSH. Sometimes, my strategy of sticking to those common consonants backfires. But other times, like today, it works out wonderfully.
At this point, I knew that middle letter had to be 'O. ' After double-checking in my head that no other letters could word in that final spot, I entered CROSS. Fortunately, I wasn't tripped up by either the double letter or the rare, final 'S.
' I wouldn't be surprised if other players ran into a little difficulty, though. Wordle answers almost never end in 'S,' since plurals aren't in the bank. The last one was Wordle #446 CLASS.
If you're looking for a list of older Wordle answers, we can also help. Here's a list going back 20 games. The best tip I can give is to use one of the best Wordle start words .
I can't stress this enough — it makes a massive difference. Without one, you'll be scrabbling around in the dark trying (and possibly failing) to find the right five letters (or possibly fewer) out of the 26 possibles. But clever people (not me) have done the math and identified the best start words based on both frequency in English and frequency among Wordle answers.
So use them! Secondly, think about combinations, especially at the start and end. Some options are far more common than others — for instance, SH, ST, CR and CH all feature frequently. Vowels obviously need consideration too: not all Wordle answers will contain more than one, but plenty do, and some even have three.
A good Wordle start word should have used a couple, but if they don't feature you might well want to try another one or two on your next go. Plus, remember the Y — this sometimes acts as a surrogate vowel, and is easy to forget. It also appears at the end of plenty of words.
Finally, try out possibilities. So long as you don't press 'Enter' you can try possible answers to see how they look on screen. Put in likely letters plus any you know are definitely in the word, then mentally change one to the other available options.
This technique has worked for me multiple times, and it's particularly helpful when the word in question is not an obvious one (like FJORD or ISLET). Wordle officially launched in October 2021, but actually started in June of that year and celebrated its first birthday on June 19, 2022. (You can read my thoughts on the 5 things Wordle needs to improve if it's to keep us playing for its second year.
) However, it only grew in popularity towards the end of the year, then went viral in January as the world woke up to its charms. In fact, it proved so successful that The New York Times bought Wordle for a seven-figure sum in early February and the game is now part of NYT Games. It's played via the NYT Games website here (opens in new tab) , and is entirely free.
Both the NYT and the game's creator, Josh Wardle, have stated that it will remain free. Some people think that Wordle has got harder since the NYT takeover, but it really hasn't . Wordle is a simple game in which your challenge is to guess a five-letter word in six attempts.
Each time you guess, you're told which of your chosen letters are in the target word, and whether they are in the right place. If a letter is in the correct place, it turns green. If it's in the word but in the wrong place, it turns yellow.
And if it's not in the word at all, it turns gray. There's just one puzzle a day, and everyone completes the same one. It resets at midnight each day.
