WATCH: Darcelle, Unipiper taste-test Darcelle Blonde IPA to prep for Gigantic release parties
A drag queen, a unicyclist and a brewer walk into a gigantic bar and order a blonde IPA. This is not a joke. That scene will seriously play out for real on Sunday, when renowned Portland drag queen Darcelle, Portland icon the Unipiper and the hold a preview party for Darcelle Blonde IPA, a group collaboration beer brewed as a benefit for the nonprofit Weird Portland United.
The beer is the fourth in the Weirdtastic Beer Series between Gigantic and Weird Portland United, a group that “celebrates our community’s unique innovative culture, amplifies our creative expression, and incubates an even weirder future. ” Previous beers include Unipiper Hazy IPA a year ago, then PDX Adult Soapbox Derby Summer Ale followed last summer and Mike Bennett’s Day Off was released in the fall. Darcelle, who when not in drag is , said she offered an immediate “yes” when approached to be a part of the collaboration.
“It’s an honor,” said Darcelle, who has been entertaining audiences for over 55 years at her Old Town Chinatown club Darcelle XV, which Cole opened in 1967. At 92 years old, Darcelle holds the Guinness record for being “The World’s Oldest Performing Drag Queen. ” “I’ve known about Darcelle my entire life,” said Ben Love, who with Van Havig founded Gigantic Brewing in 2012.
“So to be able to brew a beer with her and so something was really like a lifelong dream. “Darcelle is frequently introduced on stage as ‘The Bold, The Blonde, and The Beautiful,’ so when it came to developing the flavor profile for our collaboration beer, we knew exactly where to go,” Love said. “We used locally grown Cashmere and Luminosa hops to be apropos as well as to create a bright and tropical IPA with mango, candied orange peel, and peach notes.
” The label was designed, at Darcelle’s suggestion, by local artist and broadcaster Helen Raptis. Her work “captures Darcelle’s signature energetic and joyful expression, perfectly matching the style and tone of the beer,” Gigantic’s news release says. Brian Kidd, whose alter ego is the flame-throwing, bagpipe-playing, unicycle-riding Unipiper and who is also the president of board, said the group had long had Darcelle at the top of its list to collaborate with in promoting its mission.
A portion of the sales of Darcelle Blonde IPA will go to the nonprofit, which is currently building a Weird Portland Hall of Fame inside , Kidd said. “In our DNA has always been beer — beer has been what has kept this organization running,” Kidd said. “So we were super excited we were able to pitch our idea and Gigantic was onboard, saying, we get your vision, and let’s have some fun with beer and celebrate some of the more unique and wacky aspects of Portland.
