What is an amber traffic warning? August bank holiday alert explained
Could there be some road disruption this weekend? (Picture: Getty) For many of us in the UK (sans the Scots), Monday, August 29 is a bank holiday. This means we’ve got a three-day weekend stretching out before us, bringing with it the potential for days out in the car, festival trips or visits to the beach, or local nature highlights. Alas, it’ll be busy on the roads – as The AA has issued an ‘amber warning’ alert to flag the possibility of congestion.
But just what do drivers need to know about this amber warning, and where might be affected? Here’s what we know. What is an amber traffic warning? The AA is a motoring association, which has been going since 1905. Its perhaps best known for providing breakdown cover, if your car needs fixing, as well as driving lessons – but it also helps drivers plan their routes and keeps them updated on traffic.
The AA – once called The Automobile Association – has shared a traffic warning (Picture: Getty) Their amber traffic warning has been issued because the association is expecting around 45% of UK drivers – so, nearly half – to be making leisure trips over the bank holiday, between Friday and Monday. The warning is simply in place to inform drivers that the roads are expected to be particularly congested during the period that it is issued. While you shouldn’t let the traffic warning ruin your plans, it is worth keeping in mind – and, as The AA says, make sure you’ve planned plenty of time to make your journey.
This is reportedly the second time ever that a traffic warning has been issued by the AA. Which areas are affected by the August bank holiday traffic warning? Traffic is expected to hit a peak on Saturday, August 27 between 10am and 4pm, The AA has said. Predicted traffic hotspots include: M4/M5 interchange near BristolM1 between the M25 and Newport Pagnell, BuckinghamshireM6/M42 interchange in BirminghamM62 between Liverpool and Manchester.
However, these aren’t the only areas to keep an eye on. More: The AAWhat is an amber traffic warning? There’s a full programme of football fixtures for the upcoming weekend, plus an England v South Africa cricket Test match in Manchester – and, up in Scotland, the Edinburgh Fringe is drawing to a close.
It’s worth making sure you plan plenty of time for your journey (Picture: Getty) AA patrol of the year, Sean Sidley, added of the warning: ‘This year we are predicting up to 15 million journeys will be made over the August bank holiday, as families make the most of the warm weather and have a last hurrah before the new school year. ‘With events and festivals fully back to normal, localised congestion will peak at closing time around major venues, but the rest of the UK could see peak journeys throughout Saturday. ‘Traffic is likely to build again from Monday afternoon and into Tuesday, so allow plenty of time if you’re travelling then.
‘Routes to and from coastal resorts and beauty spots will be among the busiest, so drivers should plan ahead for the journey and check your car before you go. ’ MORE : Train strikes and traffic warnings this weekend plague summer getaways MORE : Another heatwave is on the way in time for August Bank Holiday Follow Metro across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram Share your views in the comments below.
