Credit: WWE WWE SummerSlam advertised five championship matches with Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar in the main event. The Street Profits challenge the Usos for the WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championships and Money in the Bank winner Austin Theory vs. Bobby Lashley for the United States Championship. SummerSlam also featured the return of Bayley, who was joined by Io Shirai and a returning Dakota Kai, to confront Bianca Belair. Becky Lynch Nissan Stadium was full and shot beautifully to open the show. It was very similar to a WrestleMania feel. Bianca Belair deadlifted Becky Lynch after a hurricanrana attempt and it was yet another impressive display of strength. This match wasn’t as good as the greatest women’s WrestleMania match of all time from WrestleMania 38, but that was always going to be a tall task, and it came damn close. A desolate Becky Lynch shook hands with Bianca Belair and offered a warm embrace. Hopefully Lynch is on her way to a long overdue babyface turn. Bayley Returns with Io Shirai and Dakota Kai Bayley returned and was flanked by a returning Dakota Kai and Io Shirai. Fans chanted “holy shit” and it really felt like the Triple H era was officially underway. The triad of Bayley, Io Shirai and Dakota Kai faced off with (babyface) Becky Lynch and Bianca Belair, only to back down. How great would it be if Bianca Belair’s backup was Sasha Banks and Naomi? The Miz Logan Paul may be a natural heel in life, but he will get over with wrestling fans simply by wrestling. Perhaps Paul’s only flaw was an awkward-looking Figure Four. Corey Graves said he learned the move from The Miz, and it showed. This match featured a somewhat random appearance by AJ Styles, who made the save. Logan Paul hit an impressive-looking frog splash through the table in one of many spots that made these fans forget they hated him. Bobby Lashley def. Austin Theory Poor Austin Theory dropped the Money in the Bank briefcase while trying to pose on the turnbuckle before he drops the briefcase in a possible MITB loss later tonight. The Triple H era is filled with foreshadowing and storytelling. Bobby Lashley defeated Austin Theory despite Theory pouncing Lashley before the match and beating him down with the Money in the Bank briefcase. As weak as this made Theory look, the fact that his night is not over yet should make him very nervous. Edge Returns; Mysterios def. Judgment Day After a hot start to this card, this was the first match where fans began to show signs of fatigue, although they were chanting inaudibly throughout. This was the most polite no holds barred match every. Fans even urged the wrestlers to get tables involved. Edge returned with a theme that seemed to sample his Brood theme. He even wore Oakleys and arose from underneath a staircase that was lit ablaze. Most surprisingly to me is his hair was even shorter. Pat McAfee def. Happy Corbin Michael Cole, who’s close with Pat McAfee, and Corey Graves, who’s friends with Happy Corbin, appeared on commentary to create a great dynamic. Happy Corbin shrewdly walked out in Indianapolis Colts colors. Pat McAfee’s show-stopping entrance included an acapela group leading a “bum-ass Corbin” chant. One of the silent subplots of this match was Pat McAfee’s Air Jordan 6’s vs. Happy Corbin’s Vans Sk8-Hi’s. I na moment I thought I’d never see, Happy Corbin got heat for shoving Michael Cole. There were even faint “Michael Cole” chants. McAfee averted disaster by regaining his balance on the top rope and delivering a “Swantone Bambini. ” Pat McAfee had a couple slip-ups that he was able to save, but all that did was endear him more to fans as a man of the people whom they can live vicariously through. Drew McIntyre Promo Drew McIntyre hilariously and sarcastically SummerSlam would be main evented by that Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns “for the first time ever. . . in Nashville. ” McIntyre introduced himself to a fan named Colt, which prompted Nissan Stadium to do a “Colt” chant. People forget how great Drew McIntyre is on the mic when he’s less scripted and gets to let loose. The Usos def. Street Profits; Rollins and Riddle Brawl The Street Profits received a big intro featuring Tennessee Titans cheerleaders, but honestly, fans seemed more interested in the Street Profits themselves. Jeff Jarrett tried calling it down the middle, and did inadvertently impede the Street Profits. Instead of the story being about Jarrett, however, the Street Profits appeared frustrated and dejected in the ring. Could a breakup be too far behind? Riddle called out Seth Rollins, leading to a brawl between the two that Rollins won handily. The brawl made WWE officials and security look completely incompetent. Liv Morgan def. Ronda Rousey This was a very interesting match. Rouse simply dominated Liv Morgan, and only lost after a Dusty finish where Ronda Rousey was pinned despite Liv Morgan tapping out simultaneously. This prompted a Ronda Rousey heel turn as she went crazy and attacked Liv, WWE referees and WWE officials. Kane made a cameo appearance to announce the SummerSlam attendance number. Similar to AEW faking their attendance number at Forbidden Door, Kane did the same as fake attendance numbers are a time-honored tradition in pro wrestling. Roman Reigns def. Brock Lesnar In yet another major entrance, Brock Lesnar drove to the ring on a tractor trailer. Immediately, I knew this tractor trailer would have something to do with the finish of this match. Brock Lesnar did his own ring introduction and then immediately pounced Roman Reigns from atop the tractor trailer. Brock Lesnar dumped Roman Reigns through half of an announce table, and it looked more painful than putting him through a whole table. Lesnar predictably dumped Reigns into the ring with the tractor, but it was such a soft landing. Fans didn’t react initially, but soonafter they briefly chanted “this is awesome. ” Though Lesnar and Reigns have mostly ran out of things to to do, there was an incredibly inventive spot where Brock Lesnar flipped the ring, almost on its side, using the trailer of doom. Theory failed to even cash in his Money in the Bank contract as Brock Lesnar hit him with an F-5 on the briefcase. Roman Reigns went on to win and the show went off the air with no incident.
